The Tom and Helen Flynn Complex for Recreation, Wellness, and Health Sciences (also called the PLEX) at Alvernia University was created to serve academics, student intramurals, collegiate athletes, and the surrounding community. It serves as a strategic cornerstone that extends academic teaching and learning spaces as well as indoor sports and recreation. The complex includes:
- expanded specialized classroom space for growing programs in high-demand healthcare science majors
- inter-professional teaching and learning environments promoting teamwork, shared learning, and collaboration
- simulation spaces and practice settings
- general purpose classrooms
The PLEX provides space for key and exciting program expansion at the University. specific offerings include:
The PLEX Academic Wing
- Specialized classroom space for the Doctorate of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training programs
- Interprofessional teaching and learning spaces for Occupational Therapy and other programs
- State-of-the-art lab space for the health sciences
- Significant flexible, general use classroom space
- Dedicated office space for faculty
The PLEX Fieldhouse
- Four multi-purpose indoor courts for campus community use for tennis, volleyball, and basketball.
- Six-lane NCAA-compliant indoor track for student use and varsity competition with an eight-lane straightaway. Jumping lanes and pole vault are also accommodated. These venues can be viewed from the mezzanine overlooking the space. Community residents also have access to both the courts and the track for personal recreation during designated times.
- Indoor practice space for varsity baseball, basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, track and field, tennis, and volleyball.
- Significant locker room facilities
- Large weight training room
- Athletic Training room for the Sports Medicine Program, supporting varsity athletics
- Coaches’ offices
The building helps to take up the natural grade across the site and bookends the north end of the expanded campus creating an arrival experience while also being situated adjacent to a city park. The facility, in addition to the services and offerings detailed above, supports the adjoining outdoor baseball, softball, and tennis complex through a cooperative venture with the city.
